I look for value wines that embody the region where they come from. Wines that are complex while still being accesible, and that bring forward the characteristscs of the grapes, the terroir, and the winemaker. Because of this, I perfer to work with native varietals, but sometimes I find a wine from non-native varietals whose personality tells me something about where the wine comes from, and it becomes exception to the rule.
